Terrorism
There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.
Terrorism in Croatia
Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Croatia, attacks cannot be ruled out.
Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners.
Crime
Crime levels are low and violent crime is rare.
Protecting yourself and your belongings
Tourists have been overcharged at certain ‘gentlemen’s clubs’, sometimes by thousands of euros, and threatened with violence if they refuse to pay.
Pickpockets operate in tourist areas. Avoid carrying large sums of cash, do not leave valuables unattended and use hotel safes if possible.
Attacks and sexual assaults in taxis
There have been reports of sexual assaults in taxis in Croatia. To reduce risk and help prevent potential assaults:
- take a photo of the inside, where the number of the taxi is visible, and send it to a friend or someone else
- share your ride status on the taxi app
- make a call while in the taxi telling someone which taxi it is and where you are going
Large gatherings, including football matches
Large gatherings and public events are overwhelmingly safe and peaceful in Croatia, including sporting events. However, there are periodic cases of violence between football fans around matches. Care should be taken near football stadiums around match times, especially “derby” matches, and you should:
- avoid large crowds
- follow local news reports
- comply with instructions from police
If you feel uncomfortable, leave the area immediately.

Take normal security precautions in Croatia.
Safety and security
Crime
The violent crime rate is low. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, is common.
Organized groups of pickpockets often use distraction techniques and are particularly active in:
- main cities
- public transportation hubs
- hotel lobbies
- restaurants, patios and outdoor cafés
- tourist sites and attractions
While in Croatia:
- avoid showing signs of affluence and carrying large sums of cash
- ensure that your belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
- don’t leave luggage unattended at airport check-in or ticket counters, car rental desks or hotel lobbies
- don’t leave luggage or valuables in a vehicle, and always park your vehicle in secure facilities
- be cautious when travelling on public transportation and overnight trains
- carry a photocopy or digital copy of your passport identification page, driver’s licence, train or airline tickets and credit cards
Fraud
Credit card and ATM fraud may occur. Be cautious when using debit or credit cards:
- pay careful attention when others are handling your cards
- use ATMs located in public areas or inside a bank or business
- avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
- cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
- check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements
Overcharging
Some bars, nightclubs and “cabarets” may try to charge exorbitant prices. Disputes about overcharging may lead to threats of violence, and security guards may force you to pay.
- Always confirm prices before consuming
- Avoid running a tab or leaving your credit card with bar or restaurant staff
- Check your bill to make sure it’s exact
