Exercise increased caution in Guinea due to crime, unrest, and inadequate health infrastructure.
Restrictions on U.S. Government Personnel Movement
U.S. government employees working in Guinea are prohibited from traveling between cities at night due to safety risks.
Crime
Crimes of opportunity are common in Guinea, especially in Conakry. Typical incidents include pickpocketing, purse snatching, theft from vehicles, assaults, and residential burglaries. Travelers should be especially alert in crowded areas, such as markets.
Unrest
Demonstrations and protests have occurred without warning in Guinea and sometimes result in violence. These events can develop around political issues, large events, or holidays. Security forces may use tear gas and gunfire to disperse crowds. Demonstrations may disrupt transportation and essential services.
Health
Guinea’s health infrastructure is limited. Access to necessary healthcare may not be available. Health services, hygiene, and quality control do not meet U.S. standards of care. Local drinking water is unsafe. Pharmacies are not well regulated, and locally available medications may be unsafe.

Terrorism
There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.
Terrorism in Guinea
Terrorist attacks in Guinea cannot be ruled out.
Attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreigners. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.
Political situation
While the political environment is currently stable, there is ongoing tension between the government and opposition parties.
Protests linked to economic challenges, such as electricity shortages, occur from time to time. Tensions can rise quickly. Public gatherings and demonstrations can start with little or no warning and may turn violent. In the past, protestors have damaged public buildings, and there have been fatalities and injuries among protestors and bystanders.
Stay away from demonstrations, especially near military installations, and monitor reliable, local and international media for updates. If you see crowds forming or signs of unrest, move promptly to a safe location.

Guinea - Exercise a high degree of caution
Exercise a high degree of caution in Guinea due to political and social tensions.
Safety and security
Political situation
A coup d’état took place in Guinea on September 5, 2021. Although the situation in Conakry is currently calm, it is evolving and could deteriorate quickly.
If you're in Guinea:
exercise caution
monitor local media to stay informed on the evolving situation
Demonstrations
Since May 2022, the Guinean authorities consistenly ban demonstrations. On several occasions, riot police have used tear gas and warning shots to disperse crowds of protesters.
Demonstrations occur occasionally. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation. Telecommunication and Internet access may be disrupted. Authorities may impose curfews and restrict movement without notice.
Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
Follow the instructions of local authorities
Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations
Mass gatherings (large-scale events)
Border areas
Instability in neighbouring countries and armed banditry in West Africa pose a risk in Guinea. Exercise a high degree of caution near the borders with Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Mali and Sierra Leone, where ongoing cross-border military and rebel activities make these areas unsafe.
