Petty crime is common. To reduce your risk:

  • beware of pickpockets in busy locations and on public transport
  • avoid unlit streets and parks at night
  • be cautious if you’re walking alone
  • do not leave coats and handbags unattended in bars, pubs and clubs
Drink and food spiking

Safety and security

Airspace violations and military debris

Objects from the armed conflict in Ukraine, including drones, have passed through Lithuanian airspace. Military debris has fallen in various locations. Further incidents could occur.

Additionally, balloons linked to smuggling operations in Belarus have repeatedly entered Lithuanian airspace illegally, landing on its territory. The balloons have disrupted aviation, including the closure of Vilnius Airport. The Lithuanian government considers these balloons to be a form of hybrid attack, prompting a declaration of a nationwide “emergency situation” in December 2025, which remains in effect.

There could be disruptions to movement and transportation, including:

  • border closures or restrictions
  • flight cancellations
  • airspace closures

The Lithuanian Government maintains a public warning system, known as “LT72”, which provides some English language information.

You should:

  • always be aware of your surroundings
  • follow the instructions of local authorities, including mobile phone alerts and air raid sirens
  • monitor trustworthy news sources to stay informed on the situation
