Exercise increased caution to Malawi due to crime and unrest.

Crime

Violent crime such as theft, burglary, armed robbery, and assault is common. The capabilities of the Malawi Police Service are growing, but its resources and ability to deter and investigate crimes are limited. They also struggle to assist victims and apprehend criminals.

Unrest

Demonstrations may occur more often because of political issues and events like elections. Tear gas is often used at these protests, and roads might be blocked.

Safety and security

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

Terrorism in Malawi

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in Malawi attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

There can be demonstrations related to political and economic issues. Avoid large crowds and demonstrations. Monitor local media for updates. Keep local and international travel plans under review.

Crime

Criminal kidnaps

There are occasional reports of kidnappings for ransom in Malawi. These kidnaps have generally been for financial gain or motivated by criminality. In some instances, the kidnapped individuals have been British Nationals, so kidnappers may also target foreigners. Business/wealthy individuals are likely to be at increased risk of this activity.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

There is a risk of mugging and bag-snatching. Take sensible precautions to protect yourself such as:

  • not walking in quiet areas, especially after dark
  • leaving valuables and cash in a hotel safe if possible
  • keeping copies of important documents in a separate place

Most thefts from tourists take place around main bus stations in urban areas. Report any thefts to the police as soon as possible.

Be cautious if over-friendly people approach you offering to act as guides, selling goods, or claiming to know you and asking for a lift.

Drink and food spiking

People have been robbed after eating drugged food. Do not accept food or drink from strangers.

Methanol poisoning

There has been an increase in cases of serious illness caused by alcoholic drinks containing methanol in popular travel destinations around the world.

Even small amounts of methanol can kill. It is not possible to identify methanol in alcoholic drinks by taste or smell. See Travel Aware Drink Spiking and Methanol Poisoning for information about how to reduce the risks.

Seek urgent medical attention if you or someone you are travelling with show the signs of methanol poisoning after drinking.

Burglary and violent assault

There is a risk of burglaries and violent assault, including by armed gangs. A group of UK tourists were violently assaulted and robbed in 2025 in their hotel in Mulanje. There has been an increase in break-ins in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Limbe, including violent assaults on residents. Review your security systems and watch out for anything unusual.

Risk level

Malawi - Exercise a high degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution in Malawi due to fuel shortages and crime.

Safety and security

Fuel shortages

Malawi is experiencing shortages of fuel. There are long wait times at gas stations across the country.

These shortages may affect a wide range of services, including but not limited to:

  • ground and air transportation
  • electricity
  • telecommunication, including internet

Travelling across the country could be increasingly challenging. Public transportation services, including taxis, are disrupted, leaving travellers with few options for local travel.

  • Expect disruptions and delays to transportation
  • Allow additional time to travel between locations
  • Always keep your gas tank at least half full
Crime
Petty crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and bag snatching occurs regularly.

Theft is frequent in:

  • popular tourist areas including marketplaces and high-density residential areas
  • main bus stations, especially in Lilongwe and Blantyre
  • the ferry terminals for the Ilhla ferry
  • restaurants, including patios located near streets
  • hotels

During your stay in Malawi:

  • ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and your other travel documents are secure at all times
  • avoid carrying large sums of cash or unnecessary valuables
  • avoid walking at night, either alone or with a group
  • pay attention to your surroundings, particularly in crowded and tourist areas
Violent crime

Violent crime occurs, especially in Lilongwe and Blantyre. Incidents include:

  • carjacking
  • residential burglary
  • armed robbery
  • assault

There are further reports of travellers being targeted in the Mulanje district and facing intimidation and violence.

During your trip:

  • always be aware of your surroundings
  • always keep your car windows up and doors locked
  • be vigilant if approached by strangers befriending you, offering assistance or to become your tour guide
  • if you're robbed, hand over cash, electronic devices and valuables without resistance
