Exercise increased caution in Mauritius due to crime.

Crime

Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity. This includes pickpocketing, purse snatchings, and petty thefts.

Petty crime occurs in crowded outdoor shopping areas, beaches, and other tourist spots. It also happens near ATMs.

Other serious crimes in Mauritius include:

  • Break-ins
  • Violent crimes (serious assaults, murder, rape)
  • Verbal harassment and other crimes towards women traveling alone
  • Review our information on Crime Abroad and for Victims of Crime.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

Terrorism in Mauritius

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Mauritius, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Crime

Most crime is non-violent such as burglaries from tourist villas or theft of unattended bags. Petty crime is common, particularly in tourist areas such as Port Louis, Grand Baie and Flic en Flac. There have been some reports of sexual assaults on tourists.

Community unrest

Localised demonstrations and community unrest occurred in parts of Mauritius after a police shooting incident on 9 October 2026. This resulted in road closures, transport disruption and interruptions to public services.

The Government of Mauritius introduced temporary curfews during the evenings and overnight, covering most areas of the main island, which lasted from 12 October to 18 October, ending at 4.30am on Monday 19 October.

Stay away from demonstrations and large public gatherings and follow the advice of local authorities.

You can contact our consular teams via telephone or email.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

You can take steps to reduce your personal risk by:

  • making sure your hotel room or accommodation is secure
  • keeping important documents such as your passport in a hotel safe
  • not walking alone at night on beaches or in poorly lit areas of town, particularly in the backstreets of the business district of Port Louis
  • only renting accommodation that is registered with the Mauritius Tourism Authority
  • not doing business with street or beach vendors

Report any incidents to the Mauritius tourist police by calling 999.

Safety and security

Demonstrations and curfew

Demonstrations have occurred in parts of Mauritius following a police shooting incident on October 9, 2026.

Local authorities have imposed a curfew in most areas of the main island from 10:00 pm to 4:30 am, from October 16 until 4:30 am on October 19.

Further protests may take place with little or no warning and may disrupt traffic, public transportation and access to government services.

If you are in Mauritius:

  • avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings
  • monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations
  • follow the instructions of local authorities
  • plan for potential travel delays
Crime
Petty crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and bag snatching occurs sometimes across the country. Incidents are more frequent in Port Louis, Flic en Flac and Grand-Baie, especially at night.

Theft is frequent in:

  • popular tourist areas, including markets and public beaches
  • hotel rooms
  • at or near street ATMs

During your trip to Mauritius:

  • ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and your other travel documents are secure at all times
  • avoid walking alone after dark
  • pay attention to your surroundings, particularly in crowded and tourist areas
  • be extra cautious when withdrawing cash from ATMs
  • stay in accommodations that have adequate security measures and are registered with the Mauritius Tourism Authority
Violent crime

Although rare, violent crime has occurred, namely:

  • assault
  • burglary
  • sexual assault
  • murder

Tourists are usually not targeted; however, you could be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

During your trip:

  • always be aware of your surroundings, at all times
  • avoid poorly lit and isolated areas
  • if you're robbed, hand over cash, electronic devices and valuables without resistance
