Global travel impacts due to escalation in the Middle East

Escalation in the Middle East has caused widespread travel disruption, including airspace closures, delayed and cancelled flights.

Your travel plans may be affected, even if your destination is not in the Middle East. Before you travel:

  • check travel advice for any countries or territories you are transiting through
  • check for the latest updates from your airline or tour operator
  • review your travel insurance policy for coverage
  • monitor local and international media for the latest information and sign up for travel advice email alerts

Before you travel

No travel can be guaranteed safe. Read all the advice in this guide. You may also find it helpful to:

Travel insurance

If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance. Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.

Safety and security

This section comes from the same source document as the advisory above.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

Terrorism in Nauru

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in Nauru, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Laws and cultural differences

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Do not get involved with illegal drugs of any kind. There are severe penalties including custodial sentences for drug offences.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex relationships are legal, but Nauru society is conservative and same-sex partners showing affection in public may cause offence. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Money

There is only one ATM on the island – at the Menen Hotel – and it is often out of cash. Credit cards are not accepted. Take enough Australian dollars in cash to cover your trip.

Safety and security

Tourist facilities

Tourist facilities are extremely limited.

If you travel to Nauru, plan adequately to minimize safety risks.

Crime

The crime rate is low. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, may occur.

Ensure that your belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times.

Water activities
Swimming

Lifeguards don’t usually supervise beaches. Tidal changes can cause powerful currents, and riptides are common.

Rescue services may not be consistent with international standards.

  • Consult residents and tour operators for information on possible hazards and safe swimming areas
  • Wear reef shoes to protect yourself against coral cuts and stonefish
  • Follow the instructions and warnings of local authorities
Diving

Tour operators may not adhere to international standards.

If you undertake adventure sports, such as diving:

  • choose a well-established and reputable company that has insurance
  • ensure that your travel insurance covers the recreational activities you choose

If in doubt concerning the safety of the facilities or equipment, don’t use them
