Exercise normal precaution in Norway.

Norway is generally a safe destination for travelers.

  • Be aware of landslides and avalanches. Norway’s steep mountains make these common. Heavy summer rain or winter snow accumulation can cause them.
  • A special kind of clay called “quick clay” (kvikkleire) can cause ground to collapse in some areas where people live.
  • Keep your belongings safe. Watch your wallet, phone, and bags in busy tourist spots like hotels and transit stations.
  • Review our Travel Guidance for Norway to learn how to prepare for a safe trip.

Safety and security

This section comes from the same source document as the advisory above.

This guide also has safety advice for regions of Norway.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

Terrorism in Norway

Terrorist attacks in Norway cannot be ruled out.

Political demonstrations

Demonstrations in Norway are usually peaceful. If you’re near areas where demonstrations are taking place, follow the advice of local authorities and move away if there are signs of disorder.

Crime

There’s a small risk of petty theft, particularly at airports and railway stations in and around Oslo.

Laws and cultural differences

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in Norway have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Drones

To fly any type of drone in Norway you need to be registered as an operator in either Norway or an EU/EFTA country and have liability insurance. Other conditions apply and certain areas are no fly zones. Familiarise yourself with local requirements at Norwegian civil aviation authority website.

This section has safety advice for regions of Norway. It only covers regions where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice.

Svalbard

Follow the safety advice of the Governor of Svalbard, including on how to protect yourself from polar bear attacks, the risks of glaciers, avalanches and other dangers outside the main town of Longyearbyen.

Safety and security

Crime
Petty crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching occurs, particularly during the tourism season, from May to September.

Thieves work alone or in groups and may use various techniques to distract you and steal your belongings.

They are especially active in crowded areas, such as:

  • airports, train stations and public transportation facilities, including Oslo’s Central (railway) Station
  • hotel lobbies
  • restaurants, patios and outdoor cafés
  • tourist attractions

Ensure that your belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times.

Violent crime

Violent crime is uncommon, but gang-related violence may occur in certain areas.

While tourists are not specifically targeted, you could find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings, particularly after dark.

Fraud

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs. When using debit or credit cards:

  • pay careful attention if other people are handling your cards
  • use ATMs located in public areas or inside a bank or business
  • avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements
  • never save your debit or credit card’s details in unknown laptops or electronic devices
