Exercise increased caution in Serbia due to crime.

Crime can occur anywhere in Serbia. Police may take longer to respond than they do in the United States.

Crime
  • Violence associated with organized crime and high-profile sporting events is common.
  • Petty crime is common, especially in popular tourist locations. Stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching and pickpocketing.

Parliamentary elections

Parliamentary elections will take place in Serbia on Sunday 25 October 2026.

Political demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place in Belgrade and other towns and cities in the run up to the elections. Demonstrations may also take place on election day and the days after. They can be organised at short notice and cause significant disruption, including to public transport and mobile phone networks.

Plan ahead to avoid disruption. Check with your travel provider and monitor local and international media for the latest information. See political situation.

Travel insurance

If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance. Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.

Safety and security

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

Terrorism in Serbia

Terrorist attacks in Serbia cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. Terrorists may target religious sites, including churches. There may be increased security in place during festive periods and other major events that might attract large crowds. Remain vigilant and follow the advice of the local authorities.

In June 2024, a lone attacker fired at a police officer with a crossbow outside the Israeli Embassy in the Savski Venac area of Belgrade.

Political situation

Mass gatherings and demonstrations are taking place in Belgrade and other towns and cities. These can happen at short notice and cause significant disruption, including to public transport and mobile phone networks. Most gatherings are peaceful but there is the potential for things to escalate quickly. Some demonstrations have turned violent. To reduce your personal risk, including possible injury:

  • keep up to date with local developments
  • plan ahead to avoid disruption
  • keep a reasonable amount of cash with you in case there is a disruption to electronic payment networks
  • ensure mobile phones, power banks and other important devices are charged and ready for use
  • stay away from areas where protests or demonstrations are taking place
  • leave the area immediately should you encounter disorderly crowds or a violent situation

More on demonstrations and mass gatherings

Areas bordering Kosovo

Exercise a high degree of caution within 10km of the border with Kosovo due to the potential for political tensions, possible civil unrest and the presence of landmines.

Stay on the main roads. Unexploded landmines and other unexploded ordnance remain in Serbia, particularly in the southern Serbian district of Pčinja, including the municipalities of Bujanovac and Preševo.

Disputes between ethnic Serb communities and local authorities in Northern Kosovo could lead to tensions and security incidents near the border.

If you are near the border with Kosovo:

  • expect an increased presence of military and security forces
  • follow the instructions of local authorities
  • don’t attempt to enter Kosovo directly from Serbia
Areas bordering North Macedonia

Expect possible delays at the border with North Macedonia due to the migrant situation.
