Exercise normal precaution in Slovenia.

Slovenia is generally a safe destination for travelers.

Travelers should take standard precautions against petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching. These crimes are common in tourist areas, city centers, and transportation hubs. Use caution at night.

  • Review our Travel Guidance for Slovenia to learn how to prepare for a safe trip.

Exercise caution in the Julian Alps: follow local guidance, check the weather closely, dress appropriately, and never hike alone.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

Terrorism in Slovenia

Terrorist attacks in Slovenia cannot be ruled out.

Laws and cultural differences

Personal ID

Always carry a copy of your passport as a form of ID. You can get a 50 to 200 euro fine if the police ask you for ID and you cannot show it.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in Slovenia have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Road crossing fines

There are heavy fines for not using designated road crossing points (‘jaywalking’). If you cannot pay an on-the-spot fine, the police or authorities can confiscate your documents or assets until you pay.

Tour guides

Tour guides must display a tour guide card to show they are registered with the Slovenian authorities.

Emergency siren tests

The Slovenian authorities test a nationwide emergency siren on the first Saturday of every month at 12pm. If you hear the siren at another time, follow instructions from the authorities.

Safety and security

Crime

Violent crime is rare. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching occurs, especially in crowded areas such as:

  • tourist sites and attractions
  • hotels, restaurants and bars
  • public transportation
  • airports and railway stations

While in Slovenia:

  • keep your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents in a secure place
  • carry a photocopy of your travel documents rather than the original
  • avoid showing signs of affluence
  • avoid carrying large sums of cash or unnecessary valuables
  • be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded and tourist areas
  • be wary of unsolicited offers or advice from strangers
On the road

Car thefts and break-ins can occur at gas stations, service areas along the highway, as well as in parking lots.

  • Keep your vehicule windows and doors locked at all times
  • Keep your belongings out of reach
  • Never leave personal belongings unattended in a vehicle, even in the trunk
  • Use secure parking facilities, especially overnight
Fraud
Credit card and ATM fraud

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs. When using your debit or credit card:

  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • pay careful attention when others are handling your cards
  • avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • use ATMs located in public areas or inside a bank or business
  • check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements
Overcharge

Certain establishments, such as bars or nightclubs, may try to overcharge you.

Discussions about overcharging have turned violent. Tourists have been threatened and forced to pay the bill.

  • Always confirm the price of an item before ordering
  • Do not leave an open tab
  • Avoid giving your credit card to bar or restaurant staff
  • Check the accuracy of your bill before paying
