Exercise normal precaution in the Republic of Korea (ROK or South Korea).

  • Large-scale demonstrations may occur with little notice, potentially disrupting transportation and other essential services.
  • Tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high. North Korea continues to conduct missile launches and other military activities that may increase tensions. Travelers should monitor local developments and remain vigilant. The South Korean government conducts civil emergency drills throughout the year.
  • Please note that consular services, including passport services, are not available at the U.S. Consulate in Busan; they are only available at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul.

Safety and security

This section comes from the same source document as the advisory above.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

Terrorism in South Korea

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in South Korea, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

The level of tension and the security situation on the Korean Peninsula can change with little notice. Tensions can rise after missile tests by North Korea and during the regular South Korean-US military exercises, which take place throughout the year. Follow the advice of local authorities and keep up to date with developments, which will be reported on news broadcasts.

The demilitarised zone (DMZ) separates North Korea and South Korea. Peace has been maintained under an armistice agreement, but no formal peace treaty has ever been signed. If you’re in the area of the DMZ, you should exercise caution and follow the advice of the local authorities.

National service

If you are a British male of Korean origin whose name appears on the Korean family register, you may be liable for military service even if you are travelling on your British passport.

Demonstrations

Public demonstrations in South Korea are common, particularly at times of elevated political tensions. These gatherings are mostly peaceful and well-policed. Be aware that under Korean law, it is illegal for foreign nationals to take part in political activities when in the country. While in South Korea, pay attention to media reporting on political tensions and planned demonstrations, follow the advice of local authorities, and avoid large public gatherings.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula could escalate with little notice and the security situation could deteriorate suddenly. Tensions may increase before, during and after North Korean nuclear and missile tests, military exercises, or as the result of incidents or military activities at or near the inter-Korean border.

Remain vigilant, monitor developments and follow the instructions of local authorities. We strongly recommend that Canadians register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service to receive the latest updates.

Crime

Crime against foreigners is generally low. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, occurs in major metropolitan areas, tourist sites and public markets.

Petty crime and sexual harassment can also occur in public spaces including bars and restaurants, and in nightlife areas.

  • Avoid walking alone in these areas after dark
  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
  • Remain aware of your surroundings in crowded entertainment, nightlife and shopping districts

You can report crimes, including a sexual assault, to the Korean National Police Agency by dialling 112. This service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you don’t speak Korean, the police will link an interpreter into the call.
