- Narathiwat Province
- The districts of Chana, Thepa, Na Thawi and Saba Yoi in southern Songkhla Province

Fighting occurred along parts of the border in July 2025, and further clashes took place in early December, involving rocket and artillery fire. Terrorism
There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.
Terrorism in Thailand
Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Thailand.
There are regular terrorist attacks in the 4 provinces in the southern tip of Thailand by the border with Malaysia. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to these provinces.
Martial law is in place in most areas in these provinces, which means security forces have greater security enforcement and investigative powers. See Regional risks.
However, terrorist attacks could take place anywhere in Thailand. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in tourist destinations. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.
Targets might include:
- security forces
- government offices
- locations popular with tourists and foreigners
- hotels
- shops and supermarkets
- transport infrastructure

Safety and security
Tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border
There have been ongoing armed clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border stemming from a longstanding border dispute. Thai and Cambodian authorities reached a ceasefire agreement on December 27, 2025. The ceasefire is in effect; however, the security environment in border areas remains unpredictable. Land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia are currently closed.
Thai authorities have declared martial law in several districts along the border with Cambodia. When martial law is in effect, local authorities have enhanced powers and may impose security measures such as:
- curfews
- evacuations
- and other movement restrictions
Land mines and unexploded ordnance are present in the disputed border regions.
If you decide to travel near the border with Cambodia despite the advisory:
- expect an increased military presence and vigilance
- follow the instructions of local authorities, including curfews and evacuation orders
Southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and southern Songkhla province
Separatist insurgents periodically perpetrate criminally and politically motivated attacks in the southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala. They have also carried out an increasing number of violent attacks in areas of southern Songkhla province.
These deadly attacks include shootings, bombings and arson, and are usually directed at military, government and security buildings and personnel. They have also occurred in a variety of public places. In southern Songkhla province, bombings, shootings and other attacks have targeted monks, civilians and security forces, and resulted in casualties.
These groups may also target popular tourist areas throughout Thailand.
Martial law and heavily enhanced security measures are in place in Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala provinces, and the Chana, Na Thawi, Thepha and Saba Yoi districts of Songkhla province. Cross-border skirmishes occur at land crossings and check-points near the border when Thai and Malaysian security forces clash with criminal networks and insurgent groups operating in the area.
Increased enforcement powers allow authorities to:
- detain suspects without charge
- conduct searches
- seize objects or documents
- impose curfews
You risk becoming a collateral victim of an attack if you travel in these provinces.
